Learn about LIHEAP
The LIHEAP Program is tailored to assist low-income households in meeting their home heating and cooling requirements. It aims to enhance energy self-sufficiency, mitigating the vulnerability stemming from energy needs. Explore how this program strives to empower communities by providing crucial support throughout the year.
Authorized by Title XXVI of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981, the LIHEAP Program operates from January 1 through December 31. This program is designed to help low income households meet their home heating and cooling needs and increase energy self-sufficiency, and thereby reduce the vulnerability resulting from energy needs.
Once the minimum income eligibility criteria is established, priority is then given to vulnerable households; particularly those that use a large portion of the income to pay for their home energy needs. Vulnerable households include those households with members who are elderly, disabled, have children age 5 or younger and households with income at or below 60% of the state median income. Services are provided as a priority to clients on an emergency basis.
